Laurie channels her first-hand experience as a former business owner into a passion for helping others to start up, run and market their companies. For 12 years she ran Persuasive Communications, her marketing consultancy located in Seattle, where she created hundreds of strategic marketing and branding projects for companies of all shapes and sizes. Annie is responsible for leading the Northwest region serving Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Manistee, Missaukee, Leelanau and Wexford counties. Annie is an accomplished small business professional with expertise in business and financial planning, value-added product development and agribusiness operations.

Annie holds a Master of Business Administration specializing in Strategic Management (2006) and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Management with specialties in Human Resources and Small Business Management (2003) both from Davenport University. She also holds an Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration/Marketing from Northwestern Michigan College (2001) and is a certified Small Business Consultant from Grand Valley State University (2008).

Jodie Beckley is the Director of the Small Business Development Center at Schoolcraft College in the Southeast Region of Michigan.  Prior to joining SBDC, Jodie spent 12 years in the education management industry, and led several divisions at EdisonLearning that focused on client assessment and counseling and drove operating performance to deliver annual revenues of $33.5M.  She also improved customer satisfaction by building and maintaining effective client relationships and providing high quality service delivery. As head of the Alternative Education department, Jodie was responsible for developing operational programs and training directors on how to run their drop-back in centers as small businesses, resulting in increased retention, graduation rates, and improved P&L. Before working in the private sector she served as a principal, an assistant principal, and a Spanish teacher in grades K-12. Jodie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and International Studies from Wichita State University, a Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction, also from Wichita State University, and an MBA from Michigan State University.

Wendy Thomas is the Interim Regional Director of the Southeast Michigan Region.  She has been with the network for over 20 years and has served in leadership, consulting, training, and administrative roles.

Wendy has counseled hundreds of start-ups and existing businesses over the years resulting in clients obtaining financing as well as launching and growing their small businesses. She assisted clients by using her problem solving skills and expertise in the key business areas of marketing, financing, and business planning. Wendy also serves on several small business advisory boards and committees.

Wendy was named Small Business Consultant of the Year by the Small Business Administration. It was the first time that this award had been given to a SBDC consultant. She received recognition for Outstanding Volunteer for the CEED Detroit Loan Program and Michigan Small Business Center of Excellence and Innovation Award. Wendy is also certified as a Small Business Consultant and a Small Business Administration Export Trade Specialist.

Wendy holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Michigan State University, Master of Business Administration with a specialization in Entrepreneurship, and a Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications from Eastern Michigan University. Wendy is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies. Lori Puzevic is the Intake Coordinator with the SBDC Southwest Region. She has been with the Small Business Development Center for two years. Lori grew up in an entrepreneurial household. Both parents owned their own business which Lori worked for. She gained knowledge in all areas of running a business from the bottom line to front of the house. She feels her knowledge of working for her parents has helped in guiding the clients that come into the SBDC. Lori and her husband also own their own business. Anna Bier brings extensive experience with federal grants and contracts to the MI-SBDC as well as engineering research and development and other various aspects of creating and running many divisions of a high-tech business enterprise.

Before joining the MI-SBDC, Anna spent seven years as the Vice President/Chief Financial Officer/Scientist of her co-owned, small, high-tech business in Virginia with approximately 30 employees and seven consultants. As such, she has researched, written, negotiated and managed over 30 Phase I and Phase II SBIR and STTR contracts/grants for several U.S. Government agencies including the DoE, DoT, NSF, NIH, NRC, EPA, USDA, DoD, and NIST. Before the company was sold, three products were moved successfully into Phase III commercialization. Additionally, she has written, presented and published several papers at various conferences relating to her engineering and scientific research and served as a technology and commercialization advisor for the NSF, DoE, and NIH proposal programs.

Josh comes to the Michigan SBDC with experience that aligns with the mission and constituents of the organization.  After completing his undergraduate degree Josh led a small business to a 37.3% increase in revenue through organizational development initiatives during a four year tenure.  Later in his role at Davenport University Josh worked with Michigan businesses to develop corporate training, professional development, and higher-education partnerships.  He also serves on the Executive Committee of American Model United Nations International conference as well as the Executive Committee of the Aquinas College Alumni Board.
