Darryl Horton joins the Capital Region as the Senior Business Consultant. Darryl is a graduate of Michigan State University and has worked in various management and director positions for state government in the audit/accounting field. He served as a Director of Internal Audits for the State Michigan, overseeing the various audits designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of processes. He has been a Certified Public Accountant for twenty years and has operated his own consulting business, specializing in tax planning, budget development, forecasting and projections, and data analyses for startup companies, including sole proprietors and LLCs. He also provided business workshops for the community as part of his services. Darryl has been an active member and held leadership roles in various auditing and accounting professional organizations, including the Institute of Internal Audits and AICPA. He has also worked in the private industry for major corporations including serving as a Senior Accountant and Audit Specialist for Exxon/Mobil and UPS, as well as National Oilwell in Texas.

Beth is the Regional Director of the Lake Huron Region SBDC, hosted by SVSU’s Scott L. Carmona College of Business.

Roszatycki joins the SBDC after serving as chief executive officer of Michigan Health Improvement Alliance, Inc. since 2014. MiHIA’s mission is fulfilled by focusing on the Triple Aim – population health, patient experience, and cost of care. Roszatycki, during the last three years of her tenure with MiHIA spent much of her time focused on the THRIVE (Transforming Health In a Vibrant Economy), a co-led, collaborative effort fueled by the recognition that our population’s health and a robust economy are interdependent of each other. Roszatycki also worked in a variety of roles with Bay Arenac Behavioral Health, including as administrative services supervisor.

Roszatycki earned a master’s degree in business administration from SVSU. She also received a bachelor’s degree in merchandise management from Michigan State University. Beth grew up in an entrepreneurial family in Bay City, Michigan and continues to support the small business community in her new role as Regional Director.

Russell Hartley is the Content Marketing Specialist for the Lead Center at the Michigan SBDC headquarters at Grand Valley State University. Russell is responsible for managing the Michigan SBDC’s statewide content strategy, including the SBDC website, social media, and email marketing strategy.

Prior to joining the Michigan SBDC in 2020, Russell held various communications positions at state- and city-level government agencies. He recently served as a Communications Director in the California State Assembly. Russell obtained his bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University in Health Communications.

Kate VanHorn is a social entrepreneur and has been running mission-driven businesses (both for and non-profit) for the last 10 years. She specializes in customizing organizational architecture, intentional culture creation, teaching the art of group facilitation, human relationships in organizational settings, helping business owners and governance boards with financial decision-making as well as collaborative team facilitation and inclusive leadership models.  Kate has served on several boards and committees ranging from the arts to health and human services. She’s passionate about giving teams and communities the tools they need to succeed at their missions. She holds a B.A. in Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and also has been a long time continuing ed student at Washtenaw Community College. Nora Vollmer is the Office Assistant at the Michigan Small Business Development Center. Nora is responsible for providing administrative and clerical support to the Michigan SBDC State Director and Leadership Team. Nora is also responsible for coordinating, planning, managing and supporting daily operational and administrative functions to advance the Michigan SBDC statewide organization.

Nora began her career in a family owned small business and has over ten years of experience in administrative assistant roles. Nora was a Student Office Assistant for the West Michigan Region Small Business Development Center from 2012-2015 and was the West Michigan Region SBDC’s Program Coordinator from 2015-2019. Mike grew up in a family-owned pharmacy business, worked for an Anheuser Busch distributor, owned his own photo center and photo studios, and served as an elected official in local politics.

Mike joined the 9th largest bank as a business banker who helped businesses with gross revenues of up to $5 MM for five years. Most recently, Michael has served a credit union as a commercial lender for businesses up to ten million dollars in gross revenues and is starting a new career as a small business consultant with the Michigan SBDC.

Clay Phillips is the Michigan SBDC Mobility Technology Lead. In this position, Clay supports Michigan’s Mobility ecosystem by supporting early stage companies commercializing automotive and other mobility related technology and helping them connect with industry, research, and workforce.

Clay has deep practical experience in open innovation, intelligence, business development, strategy, and alliance management. From 2014 – 2018 he was an independent innovation and growth strategy advisor for startups, large companies and non-profits. He has served as adjunct instructor for the NSF Innovation Corps program and mentor for Detroit Techstars and GAMIC programs with a focus on transportation, advanced mobility and energy.

Prior to 2014 he was an executive at General Motors R&D where he held leadership positions in corporate and advanced technology strategy, alliance management, and innovation commercialization. He was a founding member and VP of GM’s corporate venture capital arm, GM Ventures, and led commercialization due diligence for the R&D Center’s open innovation and internal startup program. Earlier in his career he managed international product and portfolio planning and new business development initiatives.

Clay holds a BA from Trinity College and an MBA from Columbia University. In between degrees he served as an intelligence officer with the U.S. Navy for six years. For fun, he is an amateur musician and composer, and enjoys sailing on big water whenever possible.

Prior to joining the Michigan SBDC, Scott served as an IT Security Analyst at Ferris State University for 3 years. As an IT Security Analyst, he managed full disk encryption, mobile device management, Office365 security policies, and provided security awareness training through multiple platforms. He has assisted with incident response, vulnerability and risk assessments, data loss prevention, and data security access.

Ed Garner serves as the Regional Director of the West Michigan Region SBDC. He previously served as President/CEO of Muskegon Area First, a private, non-profit corporation serving all of Muskegon County. Garner is currently the Board President of the Urban League of Greater Muskegon and the Board Treasurer for the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District. During his career, Ed has been recognized for having the best Satellite SBTDC Center in 1999 and the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1998. Kristi Kozubal has over 15 years of experience working with small businesses, non-profit agencies and local government organizations, including 10 years as an attorney in private practice, service as Interim Executive Director to a 125-year old women’s empowerment non-profit, and 3 years in a dynamic role as a community planner for the City of Bay City.

Kristi’s experience in counseling and advising individuals and businesses includes strategic planning, data analysis, communications, negotiations, policy-making, financial restructuring, succession planning, executive recruitment and business management.  She has significant professional experience in fiduciary accounting and reporting, due process and systems development, and a broad base of business, real estate and commercial transaction matters.

Kristi is a licensed Michigan attorney with a Juris Doctor degree from Michigan State University College of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan. Josh has a decade of experience planning and leading projects that consistently surpass stakeholder expectations in fields that include motorsports, higher education, business support services and non-profit development. This includes improvement projects in functional areas such as marketing, technology, operations, finance, staff development and company culture. Josh also has worked extensively with event-based projects and has experience planning hundreds of events ranging from award galas to music-and-motorsports festivals. Josh joined the Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in 2017 as Special Projects Coordinator.

Josh received his bachelor’s degree in history and Spanish from Aquinas College in 2010 and completed his MBA in 2017. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Josh is also heavily involved in community service. Anna Bier brings extensive experience with federal grants and contracts to the MI-SBDC as well as engineering research and development and other various aspects of creating and running many divisions of a high-tech business enterprise.

Before joining the MI-SBDC, Anna spent seven years as the Vice President/Chief Financial Officer/Scientist of her co-owned, small, high-tech business in Virginia with approximately 30 employees and seven consultants. As such, she has researched, written, negotiated and managed over 30 Phase I and Phase II SBIR and STTR contracts/grants for several U.S. Government agencies including the DoE, DoT, NSF, NIH, NRC, EPA, USDA, DoD, and NIST. Before the company was sold, three products were moved successfully into Phase III commercialization. Additionally, she has written, presented and published several papers at various conferences relating to her engineering and scientific research and served as a technology and commercialization advisor for the NSF, DoE, and NIH proposal programs.

Anna received a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Virginia Tech in 2002. She also received a Master of Science in Physics from Texas A&M University in 1995 and a Bachelor of Science in Physics (with minors in Mathematics, Chemistry and Russian History) from Virginia Tech in 1993.

Wendy Thomas is the Regional Director of the Southeast Michigan Region.  She has been with the network for over 20 years and has served in leadership, consulting, training, and administrative roles.

Wendy has counseled hundreds of start-ups and existing businesses over the years resulting in clients obtaining financing as well as launching and growing their small businesses. She assisted clients by using her problem solving skills and expertise in the key business areas of marketing, financing, and business planning. Wendy also serves on several small business advisory boards and committees.

Wendy was named Small Business Consultant of the Year by the Small Business Administration. It was the first time that this award had been given to a SBDC consultant. She received recognition for Outstanding Volunteer for the CEED Detroit Loan Program and Michigan Small Business Center of Excellence and Innovation Award.
