Dr. Erica Armstrong, MD, IFMCP, has many titles. In 2018 she decided to add one more to her credentials: Founder & CEO. Erica practices functional medicine, a specialty that looks at the body as connected systems to optimize the body's functioning. To provide this service to the Grand Rapids community, she opened Root Functional Medicine - a practice dedicated to helping individuals address the root causes of their symptoms to restore wellness and prevent disease.

As she transitioned from Doctor to Doctor and CEO, Erica approached the Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for guidance. She connected with Growth Team Consultant Brooks Kindel, who helped her think through a business plan, accounting, financial management, and social media and marketing planning.

After Erica successfully opened her practice, she and her team saw an opportunity to compete in the growth category of the “Woman Up and Pitch Event” hosted by Michigan Women Forward. Root Functional Medicine won a first-place grand prize of $10,000 in the competition, affirming the business’s exciting growth trajectory. Shortly after, Roots met its 2019 projection for revenue and profitability while remaining debt-free.

With such rapid growth less than a year after opening, Erica noticed that Root was quickly outgrowing their space. She knew that continued business growth required additional space, so she tapped back into Michigan SBDC resources to find and expand into a new building.

“The Michigan SBDC team has been helpful to me in so many areas,” Erica reflected. “From determining when I could hire more employees, finding a larger space, to expanding our service offerings, I have consulted with Brooks during each phase of my expansion. Brooks gave me the confidence to hire out certain areas of the business so that I could focus on growing and taking care of clients in our programs.”

Root Functional Medicine has recently moved to a larger 1,700 square foot space which allows the company to continue its growth, both in size and services offered. Visit Root Functional Medicine to learn more about their practice and the services they provide.
