Several years ago, Max Schimdt saw a need and an opportunity to develop high-quality, custom clothing for the EastSide of Michigan. From this vision, he developed the passion needed to build Commonwealth Sewing Company and begin to sew men’s clothing here in Michigan.
He did it; he assembled the space, the equipment and in January and February, began hiring talent to begin operation in late March 2020. They were just weeks away from opening the first custom-made shirting factory in Detroit. Then, COVID-19 took over. But that didn’t stop Commonwealth Sewing from doing what they do best. With a heart for community and a knowledge of high-capacity garment manufacturing, Commonwealth Sewing pivoted-- recreating their business to be a temporary mask and gown creation site for area hospitals.
Regardless of the course, Commonwealth Sewing remains true to its goal: to develop the garment manufacturing industry here in Detroit.
“The future is bright for USA garment manufacturing and we want Detroit to help carry the torch.”
