Shawn Preissle is a consultant for the Michigan SBDC Greater Washtenaw Region team. Before joining the SBDC, she owned a food related business in Ann Arbor. During her nine years of entrepreneurship, Shawn purchased a franchise and transitioned her business to an independent store providing personal chef services, a hot lunch program for private schools, catering and operating an incubator kitchen. She sold her business in 2014 and joined the Greater Washtenaw team as a business consultant in May 2015. Shawn is a board member for the up and coming Kickshaw Theater Company in Ann Arbor, and acts as the finance director. She also is on the board of UpStart! Adrian, which promotes the growth of an entrepreneurial culture in Adrian and Lenawee County with an annual business plan competition.
What excites you the most about being a part of the Michigan SBDC team?
“I always tell clients that it is important to write a business plan but the numbers tell the story. Therefore, when I help build a proforma for a client and their business idea shows a positive cash flow, I am excited.”
What is one of the common challenges you see small businesses face, and how can the Michigan SBDC help them address this challenge?
“Just because you are a great Chef does not mean that you are an excellent restaurateur. It is important for us to help our clients understand the other areas of their business. Managing your finances and human resources are just as important as preparing a good meal. The SBDC’s biggest challenge is standing out as the organization that provides these services. I feel we are making progress but have a long way to go.”
Any fun facts about yourself that you’d like to share with the SBDC community?
“My family participates in non-traditional sports. Apple (or tomato) ball, Pumpkin Golf, Watermelon Catapulting or Potato Cannon distance shooting are played seasonally.”
