SBDC Client Spotlight – Davis Cartage Company

Since 1941, Davis Cartage Company has provided trucking, warehouse and logistics services in Corunna, Michigan and beyond. After several decades of success, they first sought the services of the Michigan SBDC in 2013. To prepare their company for the next stage of growth, President Glen Merkel decided to separate the company into divisions to provide an efficient supply chain process for their customers. 

In the years that followed, Davis Cartage expanded its supply chain offerings into many different services such as shipping by the truckload, shipping by Less than Truckload (LTL), logistics management, bulk warehousing with food grade certified facilities, and LTL cross docking. As their company expanded into these new markets, Davis Cartage started facing the strategic challenges of rapid growth. The company reengaged with the Michigan SBDC to successfully manage their growth.

Michigan SBDC business consultant Harry Blecker was able to help the team at Davis Cartage update their strategic plan and mission statement. The SBDC also assisted the team with a BNA (Business Needs Assessment), allowing management to identify strengths, threats, and opportunities in new markets and internal processes. This assessment has helped open up dialogue between leadership team owners, mid-level managers, and support personnel. One lesson learned was that key employee stakeholders intend to remain with Davis for at least 10+ more years.

Since working with the SBDC, Davis Cartage Company has created 25 new jobs and retained 98 existing jobs. This talented team has also seen an increase of more than $10 million in sales.
